Chord ClearwayX is the speaker cable proposed by the English house for speakers and electronics above the entry level. If the input line of speaker cables brings the right level of quality to purely consumer products, ClearwayX, like the entire Clearway Series, moves the bar upwards.

Each Clearway cable is handcrafted, with now perfect procedures and materials tested for thousands of hours in over 30 years of activity. This is the level of quality and attention you can expect from Chord and ClearwayX. Offering performance at a good price: that's the point of a ClearwayX cable. And it seems that goal has been achieved as the original Chord Clearway (without the trailing X) won the WHAT Hi-Fi? as Best Speaker Cable practically every year in a row since its launch in 2015. The ClearwayX uses 14 AWG oxygen-free copper (OFC) conductors – conductors large enough to bring control and definition to both bookshelf and floorstanding speakers. Performance has recently been significantly improved by changing the insulation from FEP to XLPE, hence the X at the end of the ClearwayX name.

The importance of isolation

The choice of insulation has a profound effect on the ultimate performance of a speaker cable, and the XLPE material contributes to the neutrality of Clearway cable. Other types of insulation often produce unwanted tonal coloration, but while music should be full of colour, cables shouldn't.

The conductors are arranged in a twisted-pair configuration before a soft PVC inner jacket is applied: this helps minimize mechanical noise and also spaces out the double-wound aluminum foil shields. Speaker cable shielding brings subtle nuances that make music more alive. The American Wire Gauge (AWG) is a system for measuring the cross-section of wires. The cross-section of the conductor cable is a very important factor for determining the maximum current that can flow through it. As the AWG number increases, the wire diameter becomes progressively smaller. The AWG for a cable is determined by the total cross-sectional area of the conductor, which in turn determines its current-carrying capacity and its electrical resistance. The smaller the section of a wire, the greater the electrical resistance. We can think of this as the effort it takes for current to pass through a cable. The smaller the cable and the harder it is, the hotter it gets, the more energy is lost. For this reason, larger diameter cables are preferred for progressively longer lengths. ClearwayX speaker cable is available in pre-terminated wire pairs but can also be custom made in any length and termination. The best retailers have demonstration sets – trying the difference will only cost a little time.

There are many possible couples that can be created by combining different models of speakers with as many amplifiers.
