Description

Dynaudio Special Forty bookshelf HiFi speakers in a Special Edition

With Special Forty Dynaudio creates yet another audiophile masterpiece. How to synthesize the complexity? Special Forty are innovative high-level HiFi speakers, with ultra HighEnd components and exclusive finishes. Presented by the Danish brand as the maximum representation of its technology in the bookshelf sector, these stand speakers were created to celebrate the fortieth anniversary of Dynaudio's history. Special Forty, or Special40, contain the quintessence of the virtues that have always been the brand's flagship: craftsmanship, attention to detail, total love for harmony and the continuous search for the most authentic and natural sound.

Special Forty won the WHAT HIFI? as the absolute best pedestal speaker over two thousand euros with a 5-star rating. Today these beautiful speakers are presented in the renewed and exclusive Ebony Wave finish, and which is accompanied by the captivating Black Vine livery. All the Special Forty models are lacquered and feature obsessive constructive care.

The Special Forty is the pure audiophile's perfect choice – a passive bookshelf Hi-Fi speaker set. Refined, extremely elegant, classic, the result of esoteric components and drivers that fear no rivals, of a maniacal assembly, of an overall project that wants to enhance the peculiarities of each Dynaudio loudspeaker. Already legend. There is only one special superior to this masterpiece, the Heritage Special, a limited and numbered edition in homage to the entire world of music.

A one of a kind nameplate

Special Forty combines past and future and takes the meaning of the word "experience" to a new level. It's not about looking back on past glories. It is about using the infinite time spent understanding and marrying components, finally creating the perfect union. As in the classic Dynaudio limited editions, including the famous Special One, the Special Twenty-Five or the Contour 1.3SE, these speakers combine the best technologies available with ancient knowledge and noble Danish pedigree.

Dynaudio Special Forty are a special edition, already from the name we understand that this, in particular, is the model designed and wanted to celebrate 40 years of Danish pedigree, manufacturing and research. After the great success of the floor-standing Special 25 model, this time the house decided to offer a collector's product that could be purchased and used by any music lover. A gift, if you will, to those who believed in the brand to the point of making it grow and become the colossus it is now. The attention placed on this single model, out of every line or family is total. The Special Forty finishes are present only and exclusively on this model and are very different from any other proposal, requiring a long and "special" process. The 17 cm woofer, with airflow motor and hybrid magnet, is the most sophisticated ever produced by Dynaudio. The Esotar Forty is a special model created especially for this exclusive set of speakers. Everything is handmade in Denmark.

All in all, the Special Forty are incredibly good standmount speakers. They are absolutely the best bookshelf speakers ever offered by Dynaudio and by anyone in this price range, they are the result of an immense work, the gift of Dynaudio to celebrate, together, the marriage between art and science.

Incredible finishes

The special finishes created by Dynaudio, present only and exclusively on this model, adapt to every taste and decor: the skilful combination of exquisite classic finishes and modern shapes make these bookshelf speakers easy to insert into any stylistic context.

Black Vine is a striking contrast between dark wine-colored veneer and fiery red grain, while Ebony Wave is a captivating sinuous interpretation of classic wood and its natural grain.

Caress the lacquer with which these diffusers are finished and appreciate the incredible natural wood design underneath! Have you ever seen such a cure? Appreciate the harmonious but taut shapes, the sharp but soft cuts designed to harmonize shape and performance.

Cabinet Forty

The Special Forty is equipped not only with the best components developed by Dynaudio, but also with an absolutely refined cabinet. Inside and out. Surrounding the precious Dynaudio components, the precious cabinet has been designed with a rare attention to detail and is rigorously hand-built by the best craftsmen in the Danish brand's laboratories. Whatever the preferred finish, the quality achieved is a new touchstone compared to any other speaker. Also remember that the finishes of the Dynaudio limited editions are always different from the classic finishes of the more common series of the Danish brand. Exclusivity to the nth degree.

Woofer Special Forty

A single piece of Dynaudio's proprietary material MSP (Magnesium Silicate Polymer) is used in the construction of the mid bass woofer of this special edition model, offering the right combination of stiffness, damping and stability for the most faithful sound reproduction. This woofer, driven by a special winding and specially created calibrated magnets, guarantees record-breaking performance and control.

The cone itself uses a carefully developed symmetrical excursion for even better midrange performance. Behind it is another patent, the asymmetric spider, the passive harmonic rectifier. Minimizes the upper harmonics to further strengthen your performance and allow you not only to select individual parts in a piece of music, but also individual instruments in an orchestra. So now, finally, the third violin section can have its moment of glory!

And, like all of Dynaudio's other MSP cones, it's a design created specifically and only for the Special Forty (you can tell by the special balancing ribs around the center dust cap).

This gives it an incredibly solid connection to the coil – or voice-coil – as well as stabilizing its shape, which is crucial when you decide to crank it up to full volume.

The secret (one of many) lies in the special AirFlow basket, the tip that holds the entire driver motor firmly in place in the cabinet. Its development was a key moment, one that makes us hear cries of joy in the laboratories. They wanted to reduce internal reflections and increase air movement without compromising the rigidity or stability of the basket, and this ingenious design is what they came up with.

Esotar Forty

The new Esotar Forty soft dome tweeter takes high frequency reproduction to the next level.

Esotar Forty is the new ambassador of sound produced starting from Dynaudio's legendary Esotar tweeter, incorporating the best driver construction technologies, such as the high quality hybrid magnet system and the separate hole inside the cabinet, up to the coating of the soft dome.

The new Esotar Forty tweeter takes air movement to a much higher level. The precision-coated DSR (Dynaudio Secret Recipe!) soft dome moves the air in an infinitely smooth way. Obviously there is a lot of engineering behind it.

State of the art crossover

Dynaudio Special Forty loudspeakers, in addition to mounting state-of-the-art drivers, are also equipped with refined crossovers that incorporate the best impedance and phase alignment technologies.

Without costing "esoteric" figures, the Special Forty is the perfect loudspeaker, with an unrivaled quality-price ratio, for the audiophile who demands maximum simplicity and maximum precision and musicality from his speaker.

SLR

Let's take the new bass reflex pressure port. It's a molded vent at the rear of the hybrid magnet system that gives you more room in the rear chamber. This space fills the volume with damping material and reduces back pressure, while the shape itself optimizes airflow from the rear of the dome.

Then there's the aerodynamic pressure release system. It sits under the spool and reduces unwanted pressure buildup that could affect its movement. Avoiding small “pressure pockets” reduces resonance, and less resonance equals even more detail potential.

Recommended amplifier, cables, accessories

Dynaudio Special Forty is a system designed for traditional stereophonic Hi-Fi listening. The ideal combination is with a HiFi integrated amplifier with transparency, great dynamics and musicality.

The best choice on the market as regards the coupling is to turn to a brand like Hegel and here without a doubt Hegel H120 or its older brother H190 return the right power to make these iconic speakers sound at their best.

These loudspeakers can be housed, obtaining excellent aesthetic and sound results, on the special stands of the homonymous brand Dynaudio Stand 20.

The fine-tuning should not be underestimated, especially with such noble speakers. Excellent audio cables, perfectly commensurate to power these special Dynaudios, are the Chord Epic or, if the budget permits, the Chord Signature. We are talking about both the signal cables with which to connect the various upstream electronics and the power cables between the amplifier and the speaker.

To improve sound definition and spatiality, as well as to reduce rumbles and vibrations, the definitive accessory for the Specials is made up of the Gaia 3 floor insulators to be screwed under the Stand 20 – devices that allow the speakers to literally take flight.

What are the differences between Contour 20i and Special Forty?

The Special Forty loudspeakers, by design and size, are perfect in medium-sized listening areas and return a transparent and involving sound. Thanks to the specially made drivers, Special Forty return a sound with a great three-dimensionality, with a warm and deep bass register - despite the small size - and an extremely natural musicality.

The Contour 20i feature a more performance cabinet and the Esotar 2i tweeter (responsible for the great detail and definition of the mid-high frequencies). Thanks to the size of the cabinet and its design, they return more information, more bass extension and a wider soundstage. We can say, in a broad sense, that the Contour 20i are more "revealing" than the Special 40 and offer more acoustic pressure. All while maintaining the Dynaudio timbre unchanged, natural, credible and without colouring.
