ATC SCM19 – the reference bookshelf loudspeaker of the Entry Series

SCM19 by ATC are the reference bookshelf loudspeakers of the Entry Series, which bring the technologies of the best loudspeakers of the English brand to the entry line, which also includes the compact SCM7 and the intermediate model SCM11.

All components are made in house by ATC, including drivers, crossovers and cabinets. SCM19 has a very low declared sensitivity (85 dB), for this reason we recommend a generous amplification, between 75 W and 300 W.

With a fairly wide and extremely linear frequency response, between 54 Hz and 22 kHz, and an impedance of 8 Ohms – relatively easy to drive – the SCM19 offers a very accurate and transparent reproduction, capable of returning an incomparable detail for its price range; to complete the listening experience we recommend the active subwoofer of the same C1S line, available in the same finishes.

The 19-litre cabinet – as the name of the model itself suggests – uses the principle of a closed box, in pneumatic suspension, and is made with an extremely massive structure, with a weight of no less than 17.8 kg per piece.

The slightly curved sidewalls are designed to reduce internal reflections and the absence of the bass reflex port allows for excellent bass driver control over its entire operating band and, in turn, a reduction in non-linear distortion. On the back is a set of sturdy 4mm binding posts with bi-wiring capability.

The available finishes are Satin Black, Satin White, Black Ash and Cherry, with a protective metal grille with magnetic attachment.

Technologies

Looks like a traditional 2-way speaker and integrates ATC custom designed and built drivers. The tweeter is a 25mm soft dome with a neodymium magnet and precision alloy waveguide. Interestingly, the company avoids the use of ferrofluid damping found in most tweeters, using proprietary technology.

The 150 mm mid-bass driver comes into action below 2.5kHz, has a large voice coil – weighing a good 9 kg, equal to half the speaker itself – and a powerful Short-coil motor – capable of providing excellent magnetic linearity and low distortion. This woofer is equipped with ATC's SL – Super Linear – technology which drastically reduces the distortion typical of moving-wound drivers by 12-15dB (third harmonic).

SL technology significantly reduces harmonic distortion, and combined with the enclosed cabinet design, helps achieve an extended and linear low frequency response. It also extends the cone's on- and off-axis response, with no loss of the attack transient.

The sound rendering is surprisingly dynamic and detailed, capable of returning a holographic rendering of the stage at every listening point.

Pairings

SCM19 loudspeakers require good power delivery. In line with the characteristics of sonic transparency, Hegel integrated amplifiers represent an ideal solution, in particular we recommend the H190 capable of great dynamics and detail.

At Cyrus, the integrated Classic AMP and i9-XR match perfectly with these bookshelf speakers, providing an excellent detailed and dynamic sound rendering, for an All Made in UK setup. Furthermore, the classic half-width chassis of Cyrus allows easy placement in any type of environment, especially in small rooms.

The Chord Electronics electronics, used in the same recording studios where the ATC monitors are used, can surprise for the level of detail, depth and breadth of the stage, thanks also to the famous proprietary technologies integrated in their DACs.

For those who opt for a solution with an excellent quality-price ratio, they can take a look at the famous Cambridge Audio electronics, taking a look at the Top Range Edge line.

Accessories

To make the SCM19 loudspeakers express themselves at their best, cables also count. For this reason we recommend the use of high quality cables such as those of Chord Company, which guarantee extraordinary sharpness and sonic transparency, a philosophy fully shared by ATC. We recommend ClearwayX or ShawlineX power cables in this case.

SCM19 are important bookshelf speakers or for the more classic setups with the speakers resting on the stands. As an effective solution for quality and convenience, we recommend the 60 cm Norstone Stands, such as Stylum 2, suitably made deaf to vibrations thanks to the damping material. For those looking for a thoughtful design, we recommend Stand FS104 Signature, made in the UK by Custom Design.

To improve sonic definition and spatiality, especially if they are used as bookshelf or desk speakers, we recommend using IsoAcoustics solutions, in particular the Aperta 200 stands or alternatively a set of 4 Orea Indigo per speaker.
