Meet Cobalt: the most beautiful sound
DragonFly Cobalt, our new flagship DAC, takes what music lovers from around the world expect from the award-winning DragonFly family - naturally a beautiful and seductive sound - and tears away even more the fuzz and fog that weren't even visible in previous versions.
How is it possible? As the acclaimed DragonFly Red, Cobalt has the robust 2.1 volt output to handle almost all headphones, uses a bit-perfect digital volume control for exceptional signal-to-noise ratio, allows perfect compatibility with Apple devices and Android and is an exceptionally competent and economical MQA Renderer.
New and more advanced ESS ES9038Q2M DAC chip with a minimum phase slow anti-rotation filter for a more natural sound.
Microchip's outstanding PIC32MX274 microprocessor consumes less current and increases processing speed by 33%.
Improved power supply filtering that specifically increases immunity to WiFi, Bluetooth and cellular noise.
Includes a USB-A to USB DragonTail USB-C female adapter.
All DragonTails use AQ's USB Carbon cable.
Try more beauty wherever you listen
AudioQuest, Gordon Rankin: a good partnership: like all previous DragonFly models, Cobalt uses Gordon Rankin's asynchronous StreamLength® transfer code which sets the precedent. Furthermore, in Gordon's monoClock® technology, a single ultra-low jitter clock generated by the ESEC ES9038Q2M DAC chip performs the ESS chip functions and all microcontroller functions. This higher clock allows DragonFly Cobalt to provide greater resolution and clarity than multiple clock DACs.
Why the "Slow Roll ...?"
Cobalt uses ESS's new flagship ES9038Q2M chip. While the chips used in DragonFlys Black and Red are unbeatable for the price, the low-phase Roll-Off filter of the 9038 produces a naturally expressive sound that is always emotionally engaging and never tiring, a nice combination of warmth and details that you will find just as exciting it's relaxing.
Kill the noise
At Cobalt, we've taken what we've learned from our recent research and development into noise dissipation to employ power filtering specifically designed to dramatically reduce the increasingly common noise from WiFi, Bluetooth and cellular signals. Successfully combating this noise is absolutely essential to preserve the lower level musical details, particularly when it comes to high resolution audio, especially when applied to a portable audio device like DragonFly.
Bit-perfect volume control and 2.1-volt output
Cobalt features the same ESS Saber 9601 headphone amplifier and bit-perfect volume control that gives DragonFly Red its unique combination of power and music grip. This solution guarantees maximum fidelity, an electrifying dynamic contrast and an excellent signal to noise ratio. The 2.1 volt output makes Cobalt and Red compatible with a wide range of headphones, including low energy efficiency models.
DragonFlys Black, Red and Cobalt are firmware upgradeable via our free Desktop Device Manager. In today's fast-paced digital world, longevity in a hi-fi component is increasingly rare, at any cost. AudioQuest believes that today's digital devices must evolve as technology evolves, offering musical pleasure for many years to come. Our Desktop Device Manager will also allow you to identify the DragonFly serial number and software version to ensure that the device is up to date. Click here to download the latest Device Manager available for your operating system.
Beautiful sound in a smaller pocket ... and now with a tail
All this goodness is enclosed in a new elegant case that measures only 57.5 mm x 18.6 mm x 11.9 mm, making the last DragonFly 10% smaller and even a little more pocket-sized. Finally, to facilitate the growing number of electronic devices equipped with USB-C ports, DragonFly Cobalt is supplied with the AudioQuest USB-A to USB-C Dragontail adapter.
Tidal Master flow everywhere
DragonFlys Black, Red and Cobalt support Tidal Masters (MQA) playback from iPhone and Android smartphones. MQA technology folds high-resolution files into smaller files that can be streamed on the go. Like the MQA, DragonFlys Black, Red and Cobalt Renderers complete the deployment process, allowing music lovers to enjoy a wider selection of high resolution music.
The DragonFly fleet: DragonFlys Black, Red and Cobalt
While the original DragonFly created a new category of portable DAC, its power draw USB made it compatible only with computers. Black and Red has responded to the call of music lovers around the world for DragonFlys that could be used with Apple iOS mobile devices and Android smartphones and tablets. These DACs have shown once and for all that practicality and performance must no longer be mutually exclusive.
All current production DragonFly models incorporate Saber ESD 32-bit DAC chips.
The DAC chips we selected are extraordinarily powerful and sophisticated, however we have intentionally limited the processing capabilities of DragonFly to 24-bit / 96kHz resolution. This makes using DragonFly as simple as ever: all models are fully compatible with PCs without having to download and install new drivers. Above all, DragonFly is designed to honor the music you already own and love. Whether you're listening to Spotify, YouTube, Tidal, Qobuz, ripped CDs or high-resolution state-of-the-art files, DragonFly will offer an exciting and thrilling experience.
The ESS 9010 DAC chip in black and the high-performance 9016 chip in red employ minimal phase filtering for naturally detailed sound. While DragonFly Black uses the same high quality analog headphone and volume control amplifier found in DragonFly v1.2, DragonFly Red includes the latest ESS headphone amplifier and a perfect digital bit volume control located on the DAC 9016 chip itself: a sophisticated implementation that guarantees maximum fidelity, dynamic contrast and signal-to-noise ratio. DragonFly Black emits a voltage of 1.2 volts, enough to successfully drive all the preamplifier input circuits and a wide range of modern headphones. Meanwhile, with its 2.1 volts higher output, DragonFly Red is compatible with a wider range of headphones, including low energy efficiency models.
