Class XD amplification
The Cambridge Audio proprietary amplification system dynamically switches between Class A and AB systems. Class A amplification offers the purest sound possible, using only one transistor to conduct, but may be not very energy efficient. Class A involves both transistors conducting simultaneously, but makes it impossible to maintain a balance of low crossover distortion and energy efficiency. Our Class XD system works in both Class A and Class AB modes, dynamically moving the crossover point depending on the audio output volume. This combines the near-zero distortion of the pure Class A with the best efficiency of the AB Class at high volumes, without any compromise in performance to get the best from both classes.
200 W in 8 Ohm stereo mode is real power. But for those who think big, the 851W can be used in mono jumper configuration with each amplifier that provides 500W RMS.
Two toroidal transformers
Separate high-range transformers for the power amplifier and the input and the other circuitry guarantee sound performance unaltered by the considerable current output oscillations necessary to support demanding speakers, keeping the power supplies entirely separate.
Terrapin buffering impedance modules
Cambridge Audio's proprietary modules replace the operational amplifiers usually found in similar amplifiers. In the low-level critical gain phases, these offer a much better stereo separation and imaging, unimaginable at this price.
CAP5 proprietary protection
Protects the integrity of the system by avoiding DC peaks, overheating, short circuits or clipping.
Intelligent auto standby mode detects incoming audio signals to simplify integration with Cambridge Audio preamps.
