Opera Mezza v2 is the most compact speaker in the Classica Opera Loudspeakers line: a two-way bookshelf with rear bass reflex port, designed with a 4 cm thick front panel, custom Scan-Speak driver, and audiophile crossover. Thanks to its ultra-rigid cabinet, aluminum midwoofer, and modified tweeter, it offers astonishing vocal reproduction, naturalness, and a precise soundstage, becoming a true benchmark among high-quality compact speakers.

Opera Mezza v2 – The compact bookshelf that plays in the A-series

Opera Mezza v2 is the smallest speaker in the Classica line. Designed as a two-way bookshelf with a rear bass reflex port, it was engineered to deliver astonishing performance precisely where most compact speakers struggle: in the vocal range and the body of the musical message. Thanks to meticulous cabinet engineering, drivers developed in collaboration with Scan-Speak, and a simple yet refined crossover, the Opera Mezza v2 is a benchmark in its category for balance, naturalness, and the ability to disappear, leaving only the music behind.

A compact cabinet, yet treated like a large speaker

The Opera Mezza v2 design stems from a clear idea: to minimize any coloration from vibrations and internal reflections. For this reason, the front panel is a full 40 mm thick, a choice typical of much higher-end speakers, ensuring rigidity, mechanical stability, and reduced energy dispersion.

With a volume of approximately eight liters, internal reflections risk interfering with the mid-range frequencies, which are home to vocals, pianos, acoustic instruments, and the "backbone" of the music. Here, the work on the cabinet was crucial: geometries, proportions, and materials were chosen to keep standing waves under control, preserving transparency, intelligibility, and precision of the soundstage.

The small but meticulously designed rear reflex port helps give more body to the bass register without turning the speaker into a boom box. As with other models in the line, positioning the reflex port at the rear requires a minimum distance from the wall: at least 20 cm is recommended for clean, articulated, and believable bass in a real-world environment.

    Custom Driver: Working with Scan-Speak

The heart of the Opera Mezza v2 is the Scan-Speak midwoofer, specifically developed and optimized for this precise combination of volume, tuning, and soundstage. The driver uses a 150 mm black anodized aluminum cone, with a generous voice coil and linear excursion designed to ensure good power handling even at low frequencies, without losing control or precision.

The use of aluminum allows for low moving mass, excellent rigidity, and control of high-frequency resonances. This not only simplifies the crossover network, but also significantly contributes to timbre clarity and rapid transient response, essential qualities for the credible reproduction of vocals and acoustic instruments.

The 26 mm Scan-Speak soft-dome tweeter is also a non-standard component: the magnetic structure has been strengthened to improve control, especially in the delicate interface with the midrange.

The result is a fast, natural high register with excellent microdynamics, capable of delivering attack, decay, and ambient detail without harshness or listening fatigue.

    Design philosophy: balance above all

Designing a speaker with a capacity of approximately eight liters with a midwoofer with an effective diameter of approximately 105 mm (150 mm nominal) is a common choice in the hi-fi world, but far from trivial. Many manufacturers, to impress on paper, push the port very low, sacrificing damping, control, and power handling.

Opera, on the other hand, follows a different path: seeking an intelligent balance between bass extension and control, forgoing extreme parameters to ensure reliability, true linearity, and tonal consistency even in a room. The frequency response is designed not only to be "beautiful on axis," but to sound good in a real room, with real furniture, walls, and placement.

The result is a compact yet solid speaker, easy to fit into a living room, studio, or dedicated space, with easy positioning, natural vocals, and an overall balance that makes it a benchmark in its class. Opera Mezza v2 is designed for those seeking a bookshelf speaker that is refined at low volumes yet equally believable when turned up.

    Simple Crossover, Yet Meticulously Designed

The Opera Mezza v2 crossover was born after a lengthy cabinet analysis and internal standing wave management phase. The philosophy is clear: simple design, quality components, and extreme attention to phase.

The design considers both the acoustic response of the individual drivers and the phase alignment between the tweeter and midwoofer, optimized both on- and off-axis. This translates into a credible and stable spatial reconstruction, with a wide, easily readable soundstage and precise instrument placement even in normal, untreated domestic environments.

The inductors are air-wound with low-resistance copper wire, a classic high-end solution that prevents unwanted saturation and compression. The damping resistors are carefully selected to refine the frequency response and phase behavior of the system, achieving a coherent, smooth yet detailed, never artificial, speaker voice.
