The Opera Grand Mezza v2 is the slimmest floorstanding speaker in the Classica line: a two-and-a-half-way solution with dual rear resonators, drivers developed with Scan-Speak, and a reinforced cabinet. Elegant, balanced, and surprisingly expansive, it offers a refined and natural sound, ideal for modern home environments.

Opera Grand Mezza v2 – Elegant and Powerful Floorstanding Speakers

The Opera Grand Mezza v2 represents one of the most mature and refined designs in the new Classica line, an elegant and slim floorstanding speaker that combines aesthetics, engineering, and musicality with surprising ease. Designed for those seeking high performance without sacrificing discreet design, the Grand Mezza v2 is a two-and-a-half-way speaker featuring an advanced rear bass reflex system based on series resonators, developed to achieve superior depth, extension, and control while using medium-diameter drivers.

Cabinet – An Advanced Structural Design

In designing the cabinet, Opera followed the same philosophy as the other models in the V2 series: minimizing internal resonances and coloration due to vertical wall vibrations. The Grand Mezza's slender structure required particularly precise work: the enclosure features two dedicated internal chambers, reinforced with acoustically neutral panels that stiffen the cabinet's critical points without altering its sonic behavior.

The internal wall behind the woofers is inclined at a precisely designed angle to break up standing waves in the midrange, the most sensitive area for vocal and instrumental reproduction. The loading uses a double resonator with series-connected chambers (DCAAV), a much more advanced solution than traditional bass reflex enclosures. The advantage is twofold: greater bass extension and a smoother roll-off, as well as a drastic reduction in driver excursion at the most critical frequencies. The use of high-density polyurethane on the internal surfaces further reduces any potential coloration.

    Drivers – Evolution and Precision

The two 5-inch midwoofers use black anodized aluminum cones, a choice that guarantees rigidity, lightness, and control. Compared to the previous generation, they feature a larger effective diameter, more linear parameters, and improved power management, the result of collaboration with Scan-Speak and technological progress in recent years.

The 26 mm tweeter, also used in other models in the series, features a soft dome with a reinforced magnetic structure, designed to maintain timbre coherence and openness even at high sound pressure levels. The result is natural tonal balance, clean and defined bass, a rich and articulated midrange, and a sweet yet extremely detailed high register.

Crossover – Deceptive Simplicity, Engineering Complexity

The Grand Mezza v2's crossover uses audiophile-quality components and an architecture that includes a dedicated network for the two midwoofers. Ultra-low-loss inductors prevent unwanted attenuation, preserving micro-detail and naturalness.

The design work wasn't limited to frequency response: careful alignment of the acoustic phase, both on- and off-axis, was carried out to ensure a credible, expansive, and layered soundstage. The filter PCB was designed by the Opera team with an optimized layout, maintaining the consistency of the original prototype. The internal wiring uses high-purity copper and generous cross-sections, ensuring maximum signal integrity.

Design Philosophy – Tradition and Modernity

The Grand Mezza v2 maintains an ideal connection with the historic Opera Superpavarotti, a speaker renowned for its ability to deliver deep bass and a realistic soundstage despite using relatively small drivers. The philosophy is the same: getting the most out of compact transducers through intelligent loading design, a solid cabinet, and a refined crossover.

Compared to past models, the v2 is superior in every way: linearity, transparency, dynamics, extension, bass articulation, and smooth midrange. The result is a balanced, refined, and incredibly musical speaker, capable of elegantly adapting to both acoustic music and more energetic genres, even transitioning seamlessly into the front-firing role of a high-end home theater system.
