The borderless design of the Reference 3 with its curved housing curves not only ensures a modern design, but is the basis for perfect sound development, characterized by an authentic spatial image and gradation of the music. Two woofers with highly resistant BCT membranes made of black tungsten ceramic and the large midrange driver made of the same material ensure excellent dynamic properties in the perfectly coordinated 3-way speaker. With the BCT membrane, 25% of the molecular structure of an aluminum cone is converted into a ceramic structure and refined with tungsten and additional metal particles. As a result, the membranes achieve a perfect ratio of stiffness to weight and turn black on the front and back during the manufacturing process. In addition, the specially shaped black ceramic midrange cone in TCC technology stabilizes the membrane and reduces unwanted resonances. This way we achieve precise and distortion-free reproduction. The latest-generation bass guide construction allows the speakers to be easily installed in medium-sized rooms with even distribution of the bass waves.

Modern technology

The Reference 3 loudspeakers embody the musical and sonic characteristics of their larger Reference siblings. For an impressive sound they use the most modern technical components in the mid and low frequency range: BCT membranes. High-quality crossover components in the filter network, such as generously sized air coils, low-loss metal oxide resistors and film capacitors, allow the four speaker chassis to work perfectly together. All drivers are fixed in triple wave edges, which allow enormous deflections and can therefore create intense dynamics. The two 192 mm woofers can fully develop in the ideal volume of the housing and, with the support of the bass guide, deliver deep, powerful bass up to 20 Hertz. The 174 mm midrange driver, with its broadband effect in the frequency range important for localization from 180 Hertz to 3,000 Hertz, ensures the desired point radiation of the source. The trio is rounded off by the precise 25 mm tweeter with black aluminum oxide ceramic membrane.

Elegant design

The 109-centimeter-tall Reference 3s are powerful speakers in elegantly shaped enclosures. Curved side walls, slightly inclined curved tops and round baffles ensure a flowing, harmonious design that cleverly conceals the large living volumes. The newly developed base is not only a stable base for the speaker, but also forms the bass guide, radiating low-frequency sounds equally to the front and rear of the room. Thanks to the newly developed asymmetrical cover rings, the four speaker chassis are flush with the surface and without visible screw connections in the baffle. In addition, the cover rings act as wave guides, optimizing the sound radiation in the mid and high frequency range. Four individual, acoustically transparent and tight-fitting fabric covers nestle magnetically against the baffle.

Elegant appearance

We develop and produce the Reference speakers in our factory in Weilrod im Taunus. The Reference 3's housing, made of high-quality multilayer laminate, is extremely stable and has a large surface finish. Twelve layers of lacquer are required for the black high-gloss version with "Piano Finish" alone. Layer by layer, the housings are painted, sanded and finally polished. The result is a flawless piano high-gloss lacquer with an overwhelming depth effect. Also impressive are the alternatively available versions in satin matt white, which perfectly showcase our Reference 3 in combination with the matt black membranes.

The high-end connection terminals of the Reference 3 come from the established German manufacturer WBT. The low-mass WBT nextgen™ terminals enable single-wire, bi-wiring and bi-amping. The lower mass of the connection terminals reduces eddy currents and ensures a superior sound. If you do not want to use bi-wiring or bi-amping, high-quality hard gold-plated copper bridges are included. The Reference 3 speaker terminal features level control for Canton's RC (Room Compensation) technology. This feature allows you to adjust the sound pressure levels of the midrange and tweeter in subtle 1.5 decibel increments. This allows the speakers to be optimally adapted to your personal listening taste and room acoustics.
